Automation Is Direction: Why Faders Are Camera Lenses
Stop balancing levels. Start directing attention. A guide to cinematic mixing.
You have a loop. It slams. You listen to it for three hours straight, convinced it is the best thing you have ever made.
Then you arrange it out to six minutes. You hit play from the start. And suddenly... it’s boring.
The kick is hitting, the bass is rolling, and the synth is massive. Technically, the balance is perfect. But emotionally, the track is dead on arrival. It feels like a static photograph when it should feel like a film.
The problem isn’t your sound selection. The problem is your Automation.
Most producers treat the volume fader like a parking brake. They find the “correct” level, set it, and leave it there. They treat mixing like setting a dinner table: once the plates are placed, the job is done.
But mixing is not a dinner party. Mixing is cinema. And automation is your camera lens.
The Fader is a Focus Puller
In a movie, the director never shows you everything at once. If the hero is nervous, the camera zooms in on their sweating hands. If the villain enters, the focus racks to the door.
The director forces you to look exactly where they want, exactly when they want.
In mixing, Volume is Attention.
If your hi-hat, bass, and lead are all playing at the same static volume for 64 bars, you are asking the listener to focus on three things at once. The human brain cannot do this. It gets overwhelmed, then it gets bored, then it tunes out.
You must grab the fader and act as the Focus Puller.
Push the fader up: “Look at this.”
Pull the fader down: “Ignore this for a moment.”
Automation is not about fixing levels. It is about directing the narrative eye.
We’ve talked about the why… the camera lens. But to pull focus effectively, you need to know how your camera works.
If you aren’t sure what “Touch” or “Latch” modes actually do, this breakdown from ProMedia Training is the cleanest explanation I’ve found. It’s Pro Tools based, but the physics apply to Ableton, Logic, and FL Studio.
Pay attention to “Touch Mode.” Notice how the fader snaps back the moment he lets go. That snap is critical… it’s how you momentarily grab the listener’s attention (a focus pull) and then immediately return them to the groove.
Macro-Dynamics: The Scene Change
There are two types of automation you need to master. The first is Macro-Dynamics.
This is the wide shot. It happens over 8, 16, or 32 bars. It is the slow rise of a filter before a drop; it is the gradual increase in reverb size during a breakdown.
Most producers do this instinctively with “risers” or white noise sweeps. But you don’t need a riser to create tension. You just need to change the energy of the existing elements.
Try slowly raising the volume of your hi-hats by 2dB over the course of a verse. The listener won’t consciously notice the volume change, but they will feel the urgency increasing. You are physically moving the drummer closer to the lens.
Micro-Dynamics: The Twitch
The second type is Micro-Dynamics. This is the extreme close-up.
This is where the groove lives. It is the specific, momentary change that happens on a single beat or a single hit.
The Delay Throw: Unmuting a delay send for just the last word of a vocal phrase.
The Snare Accent: Automating the decay of a snare reverb to be short in the verse, but exploding on the fourth beat of the turnaround.
The Hat Choke: Dropping the volume of the open hat every time the kick drum hits to create a suction effect.
These are not “fixes.” These are performance gestures. They mimic the way a human musician plays… hitting the drum harder because the song demands it, not because a compressor told them to.
The Blind Point Test
We can talk about theory all day, but you need to feel it. Here is the Perceptual Mixing experiment for this week.
Open your current project.
Close your eyes.
Hit play.
Point your finger at the imaginary stage in front of you.
As the music plays, move your finger to point at the element that is demanding your attention.
Is your finger moving?
Are you pointing at the vocal, then snapping to the snare, then drifting to the synth?
Or is your finger stuck in the middle, unsure of what is important?
If your finger isn’t moving, your automation is missing. You have created a static image.
Guide or Wander?
A listener is lost in your world. They don’t know the way. If you don’t show them where to look, they will wander off.
Stop setting your faders and walking away. Put your hand on the mouse. Close your eyes. perform the mix.
Don’t just let the loop play. Direct the scene.

The camera lens metaphor really clicked for me, automation is totally about directing the narrative not correcting mistakes. I've been stuck treating every element like it needs equal volume for way too long when what the mix actually needed was intention. That blind point test is gonna be embarassing for my current tracks but necesssary, never thought about wheather the listener's attention is actually moving around.
